- Epibulbar Dermoid Cyst
Epibulbar dermoid cysts pose a distinct problem in ophthalmic disease since they require specialised diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Protheragen offers a comprehensive array of services for the development of diagnostics and therapeutics for epibulbar dermoid cysts. Starting from drug discovery and preclinical research, we ensure that our solutions are scientifically sound and of the highest level of quality.
Epibulbar dermoid cysts are relatively simple to understand because they arise if certain ectodermal tissues get trapped in the body during embryonic development. This type of cyst is characteristically lined by keratinizing squamous epithelium and contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands. They are found mostly in the periorbital region, especially the lateral portion of the eyebrows, and often go undiagnosed until childhood, with around 70% of cases noted among children less than five years old. They are noted among adults too, as seen in a study conducted where a relatively significant portion of the studied population over the age of 17 suffered from the disease.
Therapeutics | Target | Description | Research Stage |
Topical Corticosteroids | Inflammation | Used post-surgery to reduce inflammation and prevent scarring. Commonly includes dexamethasone or prednisolone. | Approved |
Topical Antibiotics | Infection Prevention | Administered post-surgery to prevent bacterial infections. Examples include tobramycin and erythromycin. | Approved |
Stem Cell Therapy | Tissue Regeneration | Explores the use of stem cells to regenerate damaged ocular tissues after cyst excision. | Preclinical |
Anti-VEGF Agents | Angiogenesis | Investigated for their potential to inhibit abnormal blood vessel growth associated with cysts. Examples include bevacizumab. | Discovery |
Wnt Pathway Inhibitors | Wnt Signaling Pathway | Targeting Wnt signaling, which is implicated in the pathogenesis of dermoid cysts. Examples include LGK974. | Discovery |
BMP Pathway Modulators | BMP Signaling Pathway | Investigational therapies are aimed at modulating BMP signaling to prevent abnormal tissue development. | Discovery |
