Pinguecula

A common ocular condition, pinguecula is when a yellowish, slightly raised lesion develops on the conjunctiva and is usually positioned adjacent to the cornea. Protheragen is dedicated to advancing the field of ocular research and development, providing cutting-edge services for the diagnostics and therapeutics of conditions such as pinguecula.

Overview of Pinguecula

Pinguecula is an eye surface condition where a yellowish, raised mass appears on the eye surface, commonly in the zone between the eyelids. It mostly occurs in people who live or work outdoors in tropical regions as it is believed to be caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays. Although Pinguecula is largely asymptomatic, it can worsen into pterygium or lead to sensations of discomfort, eye injury, and excessive tears. Histologically, Pinguecula is characterized by the hyalinization of connective tissues, elastotic degeneration of the collagen fibers, and sometimes, deposits of calcified tissues.

Diagnostic Methods for Pinguecula

Histopathology

Histological examination shows elastotic degeneration of collagen fibres, hyalinised connective tissues, and in some cases, calcified deposits. These findings are diagnostic of pinguecula and assist in differentiation from other conjunctival lesions.

Tear Function Tests

Schirmer's test and tear film break-up time (TFBUT) are some of the elastometry tests that enable assessment of tears, their creation, and endurance. Tests conducted on patients with pingueculae often reveal a deficiency in tear function which correlates with the occurrence of tear film abnormalities related to this disorder.

Therapeutics of Pinguecula

Therapeutics Target Description Research Stage
Corticosteroid Eye Drops Inflammation They reduce redness, swelling, and irritation but are limited due to potential side effects. Approved
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Inflammation Anti-inflammatory eye drops are used as an alternative to corticosteroids, particularly when corticosteroids are not suitable. Approved
Antihistamine Eye Drops Allergic symptoms Effective in relieving itching and irritation caused by allergies that can exacerbate pinguecula symptoms. Approved
Cyclosporine A Immune modulation Immunomodulatory medication that reduces inflammation and promotes natural tear production. Approved
VEGFR/PDGFR Inhibitor (Topical Eye Drops) Vascularity A potent inhibitor formulated to reduce pinguecula vascularity and relieve symptoms, following the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway. Preclinical
